Topic: Animals are in danger of extinction. Some people say that we should protect only those animals which are useful to humans. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Deforestation, industrialization and global warming have resulted in many animals becoming extinct and a lot more appearing on the endangered species list. Many opine that we should only take care of those animals that are useful to us. I disagree to a very large extent because each and every animal, in short, living thing is needed to maintain the ecological balance of our eco-system.

To initiate, the public, in general are aware only about the endangered animals that provide them with something. They are clueless regarding some frog in the Amazon jungles whose numbers are going down due to deforestation. It probably would be only a zoologist who would be aware of this, and also the fact that this frog needs to be protected because it is food for another animal, and that the frog in turn may keep the number of flies in the jungles under control. Hence, such animals must be protected from extinction, otherwise our ecological balance will get disturbed.

On the other hand, however, it is good to protect the animals we need also, for example, the Bengal Tiger. Not only is this animal our national animal, but we Indians need it because it is a major tourist attraction. A lot of nature lovers specially visit the Sunderbans Tiger Reserve, to see the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. Same is the case with the Giant Pandas, natives of China that are on the verge of extinction, but preserved in San Diego Zoo in California. These animals also bring in a lot of revenue to that zoo as people come from all over the world to see these cute animals.

In conclusion, while there is nothing wrong in taking pains to preserve the endangered animals that are useful to us, we must also take care to protect all animals to maintain bio diversity. (305 words)
