The contemporary world is certainly experiencing the benefits of globalization as travel, trade, communication and so on have become very convenient. It’s probably for this reason that a few people opine graduating from a reputed overseas university can land one a highly lucrative job. There are others that argue against this and vehemently claim educational institutions in one’s own country do provide quality education that enables their graduates to earn high salaries. I share mixed opinions on this notion.
To initiate, globalization has made it very easy for students belonging to any country to apply for further studies in colleges worldwide. Travel has also become so convenient, hence lots of students prefer to pursue their specialization degrees in foreign universities. Not only do some of these overseas colleges have high quality education, they also provide a holistic development of their students in terms of the exposure to various literature, sports, and other clubs. It is for this reason that students that pass out from overseas colleges immediately get campus placements from reputed companies that offer envious job titles and starting salaries. For instance, an Indian student who has graduated from Harvard Business school in the US may get double the salary of his peer who may have passed out from a B-school in India.
On the flipside, proponents claim that many countries have excellent native colleges with curriculums that educate students well and prepare them for their future careers. Since globalization has facilitated students or professionals from any part of the globe to apply for jobs in any country or region they prefer, there is nothing stopping students of native colleges from getting well-paying jobs in any parts of the world. For example, Indian students from the premium IITs of the country always get extremely lucrative jobs in any sector they want.
To state my view, one’s alma mater does pave the way for the salaries one may earn but it doesn’t always depend on whether degrees are obtained from foreign universities or native ones. Getting hired with a good salary also depends on other soft skills and abilities.
To recapitulate, while obtaining degrees from highly ranked foreign universities does enhances chances of being lucratively employed, there are several professionals who have studied in their own countries and holding well-paying jobs.
