IELTS Writing Test

There are two tasks in the Writing Test. You have 60 minutes to complete both.

Module 1

Task 1: Write an E-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You have been doing some voluntary work to help your local community. However, now you are unable to continue doing this work. Write a letter to the manager of the organisation where you have been working. In your letter,

  • describe the work you have been doing.
  • explain why you can no longer do this work.
  • recommend another person who is interested in the work.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Many people like to wear fashionable clothes. Why do you think this is the case? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Module 2

Task 1: Write an E-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

Mrs Barrett, and English-speaking woman who lives in your town, has advertised for someone to help her in her home for a few hours a day next summer. Write a letter to Mrs Barrett. In your letter,

  • suggest how you could help her in her home.
  • say why you would like to do this work.
  • explain when you will and will not be available.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Plastic bags, plastic bottles and plastic packaging are bad for the environment. What damage does plastic do to the environment? What can be done by governments and individuals to solve this problem?

Module 3

Task 1: Write an E-mail/Letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You have just read an article in a national newspaper which claims that the town centers in your country all look very similar to each other. You don't fully agree with this opinion.
Write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. In your letter:

  • say which points in the article you agree with.
  • explain ways in which your town centre is different from most other town centres.
  • offer to give a guided tour of your town to the writer of the article.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some people like to try new things, for example, places to visit and types of food. Other people prefer to keep doing things they are familiar with. Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

Module 4

Task 1: Write an E-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a training course which will be useful for your job. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:

  • Describe the training course you want to do.
  • Explain what the company could do to help you.
  • Say how the course will be useful for your job.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes. Do you agree or disagree?

Module 5

Task 1: Write a letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

A magazine wants to include contributions from its readers for an article called 'The book that influenced me most.' Write a letter to the editor of the magazine about the book that influenced you the most. In your letter:

  • describe what this book was about.
  • explain how this book influenced you.
  • say whether this book would be likely to influence other people.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some people spend most of their lives living close to where they were born. What might be the reasons for this? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

Module 6

Task 1: Write a letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

Your friend has been offered a place on a course at the university where you studied. He/she would like your advice about finding a place to live.
Write an email to your friend. In your email,

  • describe where you lived when you were a student at the university.
  • recommend the best way for him/her to look for accommodation.
  • warn him/her of mistakes students make when choosing accommodation.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some people say that now is the best time in history to be living. What is your opinion about this? What other time in history would be interesting to live in?

Module 7

Task 1: Write an e-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You have made plans to go on a holiday with your friend. However, you must change your plans. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter,

  • Tell him/her how much you are looking forward to the holiday.
  • Explain why you must change your plans.
  • Suggest alternative arrangements.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Nowadays, entertainers get paid more than politicians. What are the reasons for this? Is this a negative or positive development?

Module 8

Task 1: Write an e-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You have just read an article in an international travel magazine which contained some information about your town that is incorrect. Write a letter to the editor of the magazine. In your letter:

  • Correct the information in the article.
  • Explain why it is important for the magazine to give correct information.
  • Suggest what the magazine should do about this situation.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some people think it's better to choose friends who always have the same opinions as them. Other people believe it's good to have friends who sometimes disagree with them. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Module 9

Task 1: Write an e-mail (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You recently went to a concert and thought one of the singers was very good. You want to tell him how you feel. Write a letter to the singer. In your letter

  • say how you feel about his performance.
  • give details of your musical activities
  • explain how you would like him/her to help you with your musical activities.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Many people work long hours, leaving very little time for leisure activities. Does this situation have more advantages or more disadvantages?

Module 10

Task 1: Write an e-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You work for an international company and would like to spend six months working in its head office in another country. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:

  • explain why you want to work in the company's head office for six months.
  • say how your work could be done while you are away.
  • ask for his/her help in arranging it.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some people say that now we can watch films on our phones or tablets and there is no need to go to the cinema. Others say that to be fully enjoyed, films need to be watched in a cinema. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Module 11

Task 1: Write an E-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You and some friends ate a meal at a restaurant to celebrate a special occasion, and you were very pleased with the food and service. Write a letter to the restaurant manager. In your letter,

  • Give details of your visit to the restaurant.
  • Explain the reasons for the celebration.
  • Say what was good about the food and the service.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Some parents buy their children a large number of toys to play with. What are the advantages and disadvantages for the child of having a large number of toys?

Module 12

Task 1: Write an e-mail (27 minutes, 150-200 words)

Your local hospital has advertised for people to do unpaid work helping at the hospital. You would like to do some work at the hospital in your free time.
Write a letter to the hospital. In your letter:

  • exlain why you would like to do unpaid work at the hospital.
  • say what type of unpaid work you would be able to do.
  • give details of when you would be available for this work.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

It is sometimes said that people should be encouraged to get married before they are 30, as this is best for both the individual and for society. Do you agree or disagree?

Module 13

Task 1: Write an e-mail (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

Your company has sent you on a three-month course in another country. The course is coming to an end, but you would like to prolong your stay. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter, Your letter must include the following points:

  • Describe how the course benefited you.
  • Explain why you would like to delay your return.
  • Suggest a date when you would like to come back.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

Many young people say that mobile phones are the most important object that they own. Does the popularity of mobile phones among young people have more advantages or disadvantages?

Module 14

Task 1: Write an e-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

You are going to another country to study. You would like to do a part-time job while you are studying, so you want to ask a friend who lives there for some help. Write a letter to this friend. In your letter:

  • Give details of your study plans.
  • Explain why you want to get a part-time job.
  • Suggest how your friend could help you find a job.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

In many countries, the amount of crime is increasing. What do you think are the main causes of crime? How can we deal with those causes?

Module 15

Task 1: Write an e-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

Your local council is considering closing a sports and leisure centre that it runs, in order to save money. Write a letter to the local council. In your letter,

  • Give details of how you and your friends or family use the centre.
  • Explain why the sports and leisure centre is important for the local community.
  • Describe the possible effects on local people if the centre closes.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures. Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words. What is your opinion about this?

Module 16

Task 1: Write an e-mail/letter (20 minutes, 150-200 words)

There have been several complaints about the reception area where visitors to your company arrive. Your manager has asked you to suggest how the reception area can be improved. Write a letter to your manager. In your letter:

  • Describe the complaints that have been made.
  • Say why the reception area is important.
  • Suggest how the reception area could be improved.

Task 2: Essay (40 minutes, minimum 250 words)

In recent years, many small local shops have closed because customers travel to large shopping centres or malls to do their shopping. Is this a positive or a negative development?
