In many societies, the joint family system is considered an ideal environment for raising children. However, I disagree with this view. While extended families may provide emotional support, exclusive parental upbringing is more effective in developing independence and resilience in children.

Firstly, children raised in joint families often receive excessive attention and protection from multiple relatives. Grandparents, uncles, and aunts may constantly intervene in the child’s daily routine, making decisions on their behalf. This overindulgence can prevent youngsters from learning how to solve problems independently or take responsibility for their actions. As a result, they may grow into adults who lack confidence in making personal or professional choices, limiting their ability to adapt in a competitive world.

While grandparents and relatives undoubtedly provide security and cultural guidance, such involvement can inadvertently restrict autonomy. When children are accustomed to relying on a wide circle of family members, they may struggle to function without that support system. For example, in many traditional households, adult children continue to depend on parental approval for career or marriage decisions, even when financially independent. This dependence illustrates how joint family upbringing can hinder the development of self‑reliance, which is essential for success in modern society.

In conclusion, although joint families offer warmth and stability, they often compromise the child’s ability to become independent. Therefore, I firmly believe that children benefit most when parents take primary responsibility for their upbringing, with extended family playing only a supportive role.
