Topic: Nowadays there is more and more competition between older and younger people for the same jobs. What problems does this create? How can they be solved.

A trend is being noticed, especially in overpopulated countries, wherein freshers and experienced professionals apply for the same jobs. Such a situation creates a dilemma for the management as well as the Human Resource (HR) personnel as they are conflicted regarding hiring an experienced person for a higher salary or a fresher who can be paid lower but has to be trained. The matter can be resolved if the years of experience required for the job are clearly mentioned when the job requirement is posted or advertised.

To initiate, scarcity of work and job insecurity has led to many people who have put in years of service at a particular company applying for jobs alongside young pass-outs, despite the job title or requirement being lower than their current position. This creates a quandary in the minds of the HR or recruitment manager as on one hand, he is tempted to hire the older person as he comes with a wealth of experience, unlike the young applicant who might have to be trained. Yet the recruitment manager is hesitant as the older person could possibly demand higher salary while the younger one may settle for less.

A possible solution to the above clash that may occur is that when the company posts the details of the vacancy, they must clearly state whether they want fresh graduates with NILL or just a year or two experience or that they are looking for experienced people. This will, hopefully, discourage the over-qualified old or young person from applying for the job, there by save the recruitment manager from feeling conflicted or wasting his time.

To recapitulate, the fear of being laid off or desperation of losing a job often compels older people to apply for entry level jobs alongside freshers. The issue can be nipped in the bud by the hiring company by clearing detailing their requirements in the job posting. (317 words).
