Modern children are suffering from diseases that were once considered to be meant for adults only. Obesity is a major disease
prevalent among children. What are its causes and what solutions can be offered?
It is being observed lately that children today are being diagnosed with ailments like juvenile diabetes and hyperthyroidism,
maladies that used to only affect adults aged 50+; obesity being the most prevalent. Addiction to video games and/or web series
combined with over indulgence in fast food are the major causes. A healthy diet and plenty of outdoor activities are the best
solutions for these afflictions.
To initiate, modern lifestyles involve children living in nuclear families where parents generally have demanding jobs, and are
struggling daily to juggle work and family. As a result, children often return from school to an empty home, where they spend
time watching TV or playing video games while munching on potato chips, pizzas, or burgers. The games are often so addictive
that the child is reluctant to go out to play even when they can do so, and end up becoming over weight. This is one of the major
causes of diabetes, migraine, depression, and so on, ailments that were unheard off in children, two decades ago.
The most workable solution is parents limiting screen time and insisting their child go out and play. Even if they are working,
they must make provisions for their child to eat nutritious snacks that are low in trans-fat, the major cause of obesity. Once
the child starts forming an interest in active sports like football, tennis or cricket, his/her weight will automatically be
under control and when he/she combines that with healthy food, immunity will increase and ailments will decrease.
Stating the compendium, enticing video games, web series, and fast food are the main culprits behind modern children becoming
obese and contracting diseases that used to only affect adults. Parents and schools need to inculcate the need for healthy food
and outdoor activities to resolve the epidemic of obesity that has affected several of the Generation Alpha. (309 words)
