Topic: Nowadays many people prefer to seek medical advice on the Internet instead of seeing a qualified doctor. What are the reasons for it? Is it a positive or a negative development?

It is being observed lately that several people prefer to consult doctors online rather than physically visiting a certified doctor. One of the main reasons is online consultations save time. I however opine that it is a negative development because they may be taking advice from a quack.

To initiate with, the advent of the internet has resulted in hundreds of websites that offer advice or information on several ailments like their symptoms, causes, probable treatment options and so on. Hence, people prefer to google their symptoms and eat the medicines suggested by the site as treatments or cures, mainly because they have to wait for hours to meet the doctor, despite having booked an appointment. Further, several doctors charge huge consultation fees, for treatments that can be obtained free of cost from medical websites. For instance, WebMD is a very popular website from which considerable number of people seek medical advice rather than visiting a MBBS or MD doctor.

However, I vehemently opine that this is not so meritorious because the online doctor who they choose to consult may not be qualified. It could be a layman employee of a pharmaceutical company or a person with a degree in alternate medicine who is listening to your symptoms online and may prescribe the wrong medicine or treatment. The online doctor or medical website may not consider the root cause of the problem or suggest in depth investigations before giving advice. For example, a website may recommend a hot compress for lower back pain when a cold compress or physiotherapy by a trained professional may have been the actual remedy. This may worsen the back pain.

Stating the compendium, it is the costly consultation fees and long waiting hours that compel people to seek medical advice on the internet, but it has its drawbacks in the form of worsening the condition as the person giving the advice may not be qualified. (319 words).
