Topic:  The modern family structure and roles of each member have changed in the recent years. Do you think it has a negative or a positive effect on families?

Lately, conspicuous changes have been observed in the types and forms of families and the responsibilities of the family members like nuclear families or women being the sole bread earners. In my opinion, this definitely has a positive effect on the families because we are living in changing times and happiness no longer depends on sticking to convention.

To commence with, education and the need to earn more money or break away from stereotyping has resulted in people deviating from old traditions regarding the structure of families. There are lots of men and women in live-in relationships. The advantages of this are if things don’t work out between the couple, they don’t have to go through the trauma and legal issues of a divorce. Many that do get married, don’t want to continue with the age-old joint families and prefer to stay alone. This is a positive development for the newly married couple because they can take their own decisions during the initial years of their married life instead of interference from orthodox family members.

Furthermore, apart from the changing family structure, cases have been on the rise of women having full time, high profile, well earning jobs while some of the husbands opt to sit at home and take care of the kids. While this certainly is a huge deviation from the traditional norms of the man being the ‘bread earner’ , I think such families are sending across a very strong message, that is, women are equally, if not more capable than men in providing for their families. Again, I feel this reversal of roles has a positive effect on families because they are sending out the message that women deserve to be encouraged to fulfil their dreams.

To recapitulate, families are certainly changing across the world. While many may consider these changes to be unnatural, I feel these are for the best because people have started considering their own happiness and peace of mind over pleasing society. (325 words).
