Topic:Some people think that criminal behavior can have genetic reasons, while others believe that only circumstances can lead some people to crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.


Criminology is the scientific study of crime and criminals. Many criminologists and psychologists have researched hardcore criminals in order to understand the underlying factors that compel them to commit crimes. This has led to some opining that criminal behavior is hereditary while others argue that situations force people into unlawful acts. I support both theories.


To initiate, several mental disorders like schizophrenia, depression, anxiety attacks and so on are passed on genetically from grandparents and/or parents. These aliments often predispose the sufferers to criminal tendencies, and a few may actually end up committing crimes. Apart from this, scientists have been able to identify specific genes that provoke violence, leading to people physically assaulting others. For example, men who commit violent crimes against women.


On the flip side, “situations” are considered as the preferred reason to explain why people, especially children who never had a criminal past or family history of crime, engage in theft, robbery, murder and so on. Hunger is one of the most compelling circumstances that goads a person to pick a pocket or steal food. Children who have been raised in families where either or both parents are lawbreakers also have chances of turning to crime because they feel it is natural to do so. Greed, is another vital factor, especially for white collar crimes committed by bank officials and the situation that tempts people to commit fraud is their desire for an expensive lifestyle. For example, the bank officials who enabled Nirav Modi to defraud Punjab National Bank.


To recapitulate, and state my opinion, I feel both genetics and circumstances may cause a person to become a delinquent. A person who is depressed or starving may not be able to think coherently when stabbing someone out of mental instability in the former case and desperation in the case of the latter. (305 words).
